Interests and education in Science/engineering/economics fields, but mostly post about politics at the moment. Not revealing personal details. Salmon looks cool and I like cooking it, thus the name and picture.
so can't link or screenshot.)

As others have pointed out, the "data guys" absolutely suck at understanding policy, lie a lot, ignore polls when they don't tell the story the centrist polling guys want, etc., so its pretty obvious what's actually going on.

So now political consultants use polling to tell dems to get more centrist.

Current popular social media thing is to talk "values", "stand for something", and I'm pretty sure I've seen bits and pieces of "The best way to appeal to values is to get more centrist." (Just don't remember where,

So, in the 1990's and 2000's, political consultants sold their instinct, gut level understanding, etc. and told dems to get centrist. But then poll aggregators (Nate silver most famously, but also several others) did a better job at election predictions than the gut level understanding guys.

Had a blog post planned for a long time on these data guys (My background is also mostly in STEM/quantitative stuff.) Their thought process is pretty blatantly

-Are centrist, want a way to justify it.
-Nate Silver and other polling stuff was popular over the past decade
-We'll use polling!!!

politics, Musk support pairs "we'll get amazing new technology" with the management issues, bad behavior, later Nazi support, etc. (at least, technology is the story, though lots of other organizations can also develop what Musk's companies do.)

qualities
-Platner the recent guy pairs some nice sounding words with the Nazi tattoos and other issues, gets strong support from some operatives who didn't care about people pairing the same nice words with fewer problems.
-Khive pairs "first Black woman president" with lots of centrism.

A more general model seems to be: lots of political types are assholes who want to look good, who want to pair a goal that sounds good with as many problem qualities as they can.

So "electable" is the good sounding goals, corruption, bad policies, assholishness, incompetence, etc. are the bad

New announcement: Because 4 <6, 8, 10, and a lot, the blog will shift to covering insects, then squid, then crabs lobsters and shrimp, before finally settling on millipedes as it's focus. The slow increase will allow some adjustment time.

"you have to vote for the questionable centrist person."
December 13, 2025 at 11:28 PM
Competence, corruption, lots of good qualities outside of "agree on issues" to be included on who to vote for.

However, overall sentiment makes sense, if a candidate is 5% better by whatever measurement, why not run a primary? Which hardcore dems will rage it while using the same logic for

Slightly disappointed it isn't Niou doing a rematch. (Having the "autistic youngerish asian woman" get elected is kind of nice, though I have no solid sense of who would do a better job in congress.), but this side of things does make it funny.
