The name was approved by Powhatan tribal elders, and a naming ceremony was held on November 12th, 2019 at NASA Headquarters. Reverend Nick Miles, Tecumseh Red Cloud of the Pamunkey Tribe performed a traditional Algonquian chant at the ceremony.

the object was officially named Arrokoth” in 2019. Arrokoth is an Algonquian word that means “Sky”. It was chosen to honor the Powhatan people indigenous to the Tidewater region of Virginia and Maryland where the operational headquarters of the instruments that helped discover Arrokoth are located.
