For my non Spanish speaking friends: my name is Dimitri Forero. I am an entomologist working on the evolution and biodiversity of true bugs (Hemiptera: Heteroptera). I am really fortunate to be working in such a biodiverse place as Colombia! Many new species to uncover!

It's #WorldOctopusDay! These beauties from our collection are both by French pharmacist and naturalist Jean Baptiste Vérany (1800-65).

Octopus vulgaris - the common octopus, which can grow to 9kg and change colour to match its surroundings.
Common octopus with brown and yellow colouring with hints of blue. It has yellow eyes and fills the image.

Berlin ;bei Gottlieb August Lange, 1780-1789. The largely nocturnal spot-fin porcupine fish spends most of its time in caves or underneath coral & is poisonous 2 eat

Illustration of a spot-fin porcupine fish, shown head-on with a round, spiked body covered in sharp, conical spines. The fish has large, protruding eyes and a small open mouth. Its fins, spotted with red and brown markings, are visible on the sides and top of the body. The image is a detailed, vintage natural history drawing emphasizing the fish’s protective spines and distinctive facial features.

I think for me the most compelling answer for "why fund basic research?" (and the one most relevant to the people doing the work) is that humans are curious and finding stuff out makes us happy and fulfilled. Science is a thing humans like. Life would be more dull and sad if we didn't do it.

🔬 I led this research as a doctoral student at @UNALoficial, together with a great team of collaborators in Colombia and the US. This work shows that museum collections are time machines — letting us track how species change through time.

Newly published in Austral Entomology: Liu et al describes the new assassin bug Rasahus ellipticus sp. nov., reinstates R. sipolisii as a valid species, reports the macropterous male of R. bifurcatus for the first time, and designates lectotypes for several related taxa.

We had one of my favorite crabs in the invertebrate teaching lab today! This is Dromidia sp. a carrier crab. Their last pair of legs is modified to carry sponges and other animals as a defensive mechanism. This one is carrying a colonial tunicate. #invertebrates 🦑🦀
A cute carrier crab in an aquarium. The crab is red with large claws and is carrying a white colonial tunicate on its back.

Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717) was a scientific illustrator most famous for her 'Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium'. In this book filled with beautifully illustrated plates she explored the then poorly understood concept of insect metamorphosis.

The butterfly, shown in two positions, has large golden brown eyespots on the outer part of the wings whereas the inside are blue and brown. Clouded buff, Diacrisia sannio. It worked; with a little patience, I was able to document the final phase. It was exciting to see how the larva developed a shiny, metallic head shortly before pupation.
