That's true! Although since 1982 it's progressively become more like other archaeological journals. I think that excavation reports were always edited, because they were not submitted in a final form. I think that in the old days the editorial staff did quite a lot of what we would call actual work

It was already clear in the early 1990s (thanks mainly to the work of Paul Halstead) that the system was nothing like that, but who needs evidence when "we can be sure"?
