Entirely possible they were still alive during the original trilogy too (though in comics set after IV, an investigation on Naboo on behalf of Vader trying to find his son in doesn't mention them)

They do learn about her at some point but it's still really weird that she's never mentioned, yeah, especially after Luke finds out about his dad. More a fault of the original films' sexism than anything to do with the prequels though (not that those are perfect on that front)
