I've just realised I'm at the point in the series where I get no more Gabrielle Drake and George Sewell, and I am bereft!

I have to be honest, I have a distinct feeling that UFO is going to be by far the most fun I ever have with an Anderson series.

I have never found the puppet shows particularly appealing, once you get to the dialogue scenes. UFO squares the circle, it's all the fun stuff, done in a way I can enjoy.

Cheers. Yep, as I thought.

I seem to recall you saying 'Frank Spencer Is A Cunt' sometimes had two days in the studio, but the first day was often just rehearsal rather than any actual recording?

@davidbrunt.bsky.social Question. Am I correct in thinking that in 1979, a BBC sitcom getting two days in the studio was *extremely* uncommon?

For what it's worth, it's consistently working for me this evening, no errors. Not sure if it's been fixed, or I'm just lucky?

I keep getting confused between Bernie Winters and Bernie Clifton.

David Galaxy gives the game away with a long stretch of no sex, and then a brief shot of a soapy bottom in a shower, and then another long stretch of no sex.

If you're really that embarrassed about making a porno, don't bother.

And while the Confessions films are towards the more "respectable" end of these films, they actually show *far* more interest in sex scenes which are supposed to titillate and arouse than a lot of the supposed dodgier end.

My trawl through the dregs of 70s British sex films - and some of them I have truly enjoyed - has left me with one inescapable conclusion: every single film would be better if they'd actually leant into the sex MORE, not less.

I mean, I can literally get two sex workers pretending to be lesbians in my front room without paying that much, I do expect films to offer me something a little tricker to achieve.
dirtyfeed.org
The one potentially interesting interesting scene in the middle simply had the air of two sex workers pretending to be lesbians, and yes, I guess that's what you're actually doing on-set, but the film itself isn't supposed to give off that vibe.
dirtyfeed.org
Actually a great opening - there's a very funny VD joke - and the ending has a pornographer's dim view of the police, which is interesting.

But the middle should be filled with multiple wildly improbable sex scenes, and they seemed to just lose interest in all that.

A great scene late on with Mary Millington, but if you're trying to make a comedy in 1979, please go to the BBC and they'll provide a studio audience to make sure that you're actually being funny.

Confessions from the David Galaxy Affair:

Sorry, are you making a porno or not? I TUNED INTO THIS FOR SEX AND BREASTS, STOP WASTING MY TIME

The hilarious thing about Sub-Smash is that it beats practically any film I've ever seen which does the same kind of story. Films with a far higher budget and a far longer shooting schedule.

Absolutely brilliant moment where Straker, after his claustrophobia is made apparent and we see the walls bearing in on him, comments "It's a tight ship, Captain".

I feel the same way with Sub-Smash - THIS is why action TV series keep doing people-trapped-and-need-rescuing stories. So many of them are incredibly, mind-numbingly dull.

But Sub-Smash shows that if you get it right, you can create something absurdly great.

The thing that I took most strongly from the 1978 Superman is: right, THIS is one reason why people want to make superhero films. Because if you get it right, then you can achieve something like this.

In my opinion - of the ones I've seen - so many don't get it right. But the chance is there.

UFO, "Sub-Smash": A brilliant episode, and one which reminds me of the 1978 Superman film in a very particular way.

One thing that’s notable about UFO is that there really is a base level of quality that the show reaches even in its worst episodes.

You’re nearly always guaranteed a good time, and I don’t personally find that with, say, Blake’s 7, although the best episodes of that show are exceptional.

It really is nice to see UFO doing its bit for race relations.

It's incredible what you can get done in 25 minutes when you set your mind to it.

I called "The Party" wildly ambitious, and it really does feel like it. A psychiatrist takes centre stage at a party and tries to fix all the couples' various problems, only to reveal the gaping heart at the centre of his own marriage. It really is fantastic.

I know the show's makers were struggling a little with Rhoda and Joe's relationship - and I know roughly what's to come - but I think they do a wonderful job at portraying all the little niggles and arguments in a marriage. I'm fascinating by how WHAT HAPPENS actually plays out.
