We were saddened to learn of the passing of our dear friend and former colleague Becky Newsome after a courageous battle with cancer.

Becky was a fierce advocate for disabled people’s rights. Her warmth, humour and dedication won't be forgotten.

📢Joint statement.

We stand united with organisations working to tackle poverty and advance the rights and inclusion of disabled people in rejecting harmful narratives that pit communities against each other.

These are not competing issues.

Statement

We, Disability Wales, Bevan Foundation, The Trussell Trust, Citizens Advice and All Wales Forum, as organisations working to tackle poverty and advance the rights and inclusion of disabled people, categorically reject recent media reports suggesting that changes to disability welfare proposals could threaten the removal of the two-child benefit cap.

These claims imply that vital support for disabled people comes at the expense of families in poverty, setting groups against each other. We firmly reject this notion. Disabled people are disproportionately affected by poverty; these issues are interconnected, not competing. Disabled families across Wales already live in poverty, including children. It is unacceptable to pit one vulnerable group against another.

Neither disabled people nor those living in poverty should be forced into a false choice about whose support is more deserving. We have long called for policies that lift all people out of hardship, and alternative, fairer approaches to funding social security.

We stand together in solidarity to demand a coproduced, compassionate and inclusive approach to policy-making that upholds the rights and dignity of all.

Thousands of disabled people face a disproportionate impact from the cuts that remain in the Bill.

We thank MPs who listened to us and bravely opposed it.

We will continue to resist this disastrous Bill and all other attacks on our rights.

Statement

The unedifying and chaotic scenes at Westminster this week were no place to debate legislation that will have long-term and significant impacts on the wellbeing and incomes of thousands of disabled people.

The confusion and uncertainty created have only compounded already high levels of stress and anxiety, while deepening mistrust in the UK Government for which they should rightly be held to account.

While many PIP recipients will be relieved that cuts to existing and new claimants will not go ahead, we remain concerned that the tattered remnants of the Bill still include cuts to the health-related top-up to Universal Credit, potentially affecting around 700,000 disabled people on the lowest incomes. The only way forward now is to scrap the Bill entirely and start again with a genuinely co-produced approach to reforming a broken welfare system.

Against the odds, the Disabled People’s Movement has remained strong and resolute in challenging the cruel and immoral benefits cuts the UK Government planned to impose on some of the poorest members of society. We thank the MPs who listened to us and bravely opposed the proposals. We will continue to resist this disastrous Bill and all other attacks on our rights.
