Greetings from Frankfurt, where are rival team has just done "Mouvement" twice.

In Frankfurt again. No luck finding the Städel's Chardin, but here's another, on loan from the Louvre.
Something Debussy wrote, about depicting not the object but the memory of the object.

Strip (2011)

The painting, though, is impossible to see. Dazzled eyes dance, and there's perpetual rain. (This, again, is a detail.)

Kerze (1982)

Over-reproduced, these candles paintings (hence the choice of a detail, with the photographer dimly reflected in the glass), but so beautiful

Strich (auf Rot) (1980)

Hard to photograph.
Hard to make, since the impression of a single huge brushstroke is meticulously constructed.

Grau (1972)

These two pictures are very similar in colour, but not in surface.

Grey "has the capacity that no other colour has, to make 'nothing' visible" (the artist)

Familie am Meer (1964)

Disconcertingly, the people are more three-dimensional, more real, than they could possibly have been in the original snapshot.

No, Philippe Auguste wasn't pregnant; "enceinte" can also mean "enclosure". And you can have an "enceinte bluetooth", though that wasn't available around the year 1200.

(The hilltop fortress was described by Maupassant: "More than any other ruin, it astonishes by its simple hugeness, its majesty, its aura of power and depth.")
