I think I've shared all that I can about this project. Perhaps I could make a write-up on how I composited some scenes but that'd take me some time which I don't have at the moment haha.
Thank you for reading all my jargon for the past few days!

Afterwards, Gabrielle did another designs to which some of us did second passes on.
After settling on some kind of "professional cunning spy thief that use disguises to infiltrate" personality, giving her some "sly" eyes was the direction we went towards.

I referenced the head bob movement from Toshiyuki Inoue's book "How to Animate Characters Walking". It is unfortunately not translated in english anywhere and I can't recall where I found this snippet (but that's the only translated extract)

Process of a scene which I think I did a pretty darn good job here.
I did the storyboard and animation. The cleanup in the first scene was done by Lada Volpi, and the compositing for both scenes was done by Gabrielle Do Duy. She also corrected the character's expression in the first scene.

There are a lot of scenes in the film in which I adhered to this philosophy because the results looked more appealing to me.

Normally, when doing a motion like this, the character's cape wouldn't move as much but I was inspired by Benjamin Faure's work on Chainsaw Man in which, after taking a reference of himself doing action moves with a long coat on, he said the following:

Tie-down of a scene.
I don't think I did a good job here.

There were many times when AE made our line effect flicker for no apparent reason.
Sometimes it was fixed, sometimes it wasn't and it drove all of us crazy.
(here's an example below, I'm not sure if bluesky's compression will make it visible but pay attention to the lines flickering)

I was given a color key by Gabrielle Do Duy for the compositing stage which greatly helped.
However, I couldn't really get a good result by moving gradients around or by offsetting the silhouette for fake highlights, which was how we did shadows for the majority of the film due to time constraints.

What's 17 more process posts? I can always start again, have another video!

So perhaps instead of thinking "this shouldn't be there", it'd be wiser to think "how can I make this work" instead.

Since she was occupied with the other character design and storyboard (i was not initially on the board team), I offered to help her finish the Intruder's design.
September 11, 2025 at 11:43 PM
I liked the original design by her but he didn't read to me as a fast, professional thief that could be seen as scary.

With that in mind, I took inspiration from oppressive pursuer like characters, like Miguel O'Hara and Mr X, along with some other thief designs I know of.

Okay here's actually something new.
Final character sheet for the Intruder for our thesis film.

To make these characters walk forward, I first animated them in place with some landmarks (like crosses or a square), resized them along a path and then added the up and down motion.

Tie-down of an animation I did for "Chef's Choice", another thesis film from my year.
I was not a main team member of this project.

No disrespect to the in-betweener, that shit is hard.

I also made sure that the spacing is slightly different for each body parts so it looked more organic.

Btw here's what the woman looked like before Gabrielle Do Duy redrew it. Every day, I thank her at an altar for her gracious work. Umbasa. 🙏

Before doing the in-betweens, I drew some arc guides because I didn't want to fall into the trap of making the movement look "jagged", as if the character moved in a straight manner and bumped into walls like a DVD logo.
