I have a theory about why Joel called Gerry Anderson "Gene".
We know that the MST crew are pro wrestling fans, and back in the 1960s there was a well known wrestler in the midwest named Gene Anderson. Of course, it might have just been a brain burp on Joel's part but it could have been a tribute.

Regarding the "Morton Thigh" riff.
It's actually "Morton Thi", which is a nickname for the Morton Thiokol company, which makes rocket motors, and specifically the solid rocket boosters for the Space Shuttle that blew up the Challenger. It wouldn't have been as obscure back then as it is today.
