Slight correction here: The token sharing concept is part of the "Trust Exchange" which is an extension to the Digital ID system (but technically not the Digital ID system itself).

I do hope we see its use in the near future, it's a great idea.

More precisely, the exposure draft floated last year included a provision to exclude Government authorised content.

This was rightly criticised and never made it into the bill tabled to parliament. The whole point of an exposure draft is for consultation and feedback.

Politicians were not excluded from the bill.

"Professional media" were exempt only because they are subject to existing ACMA codes. I.e. they are already accountable - if they lie or mislead you can submit a complaint first to them and second (if they do not issue a correction) to ACMA.

The Digital ID system, properly implemented, will be a massive improvement over the status quo in terms of privacy and security.

The idea is that you can verify your identity by sharing a signed token (which importantly contains zero information about your identity).

That tweet is from August 2022 about the Bell inquiry - an investigation into the Morrison secret ministries scandal.

Following that investigation the government passed the Ministers of State Amendment Act 2023, to ensure all future ministerial appointments (and many others) are made public.
