The effects hold up so well because they were done with care an attention. The CGI back then was very expensive and not all that great, so they did everything they could do in camera to make sure that the CGI fit with the rest of the footage.

One of the disadvantages of big-budget TV is that there is no space to get to know the characters or to let the story breathe because each episode has to be stuffed full of story like a turkey. We need longer seasons of less flashy looking TV.

Makes an interesting pairing with The Invisibles by Grant Morrison, mainly because of how conspiracy culture has changed in the 30 years since it was published. They were a lot more fun and goofy in the 90s.

Check out Department of Truth by James Tynion IV. It's set in a world that works on concensus reality, so if enough people believe a thing, it's true. There's a secret agency who have to suppress conspiracies or else the world will be flat, crawling with Yeti and ruled by lizards before you know it.
