He has to say it's an effort thing because he can't say "the team is constructed in such a way that everybody has to overachieve their skill level for us to maybe hang with the big dogs in the west" but that's what the issue ultimately is

The Wickeds' big problem is that they were clearly very cognizant of the problems with the source material (the play, that is) but were not really brave enough to try to address any of that despite having two more hours of showtime to play with
