I struggle to imagine why I'd give Bari Weiss the benefit of the doubt on any subject, ever. She's repeatedly proven herself to be a shameless careerist and networker with very limited principles.

Bari is fundamentally a very transactional person; it's why she's been so successful IMO. My guess is that someone asked her to do it. Whatever rationale she might offer (to herself or to anyone else) is usually cooked up after the fact in service of that.
