xAI is a quasi-company that makes an LLM called "Grok" used by disgusting perverts on the r/Grok Subreddit to make video pornography or to summarize articles for imbeciles on Twitter. It costs $1 billion a month to run, and I think it poses a real threat to Musk.

xAI - Burning $1 Billion A Month+, Using Insane Special Purpose Vehicle To Build Second Giant Data Center, r/Grok Single Worst Reddit I’ve Seen In My Life, Unrestrained LLM Straight Up Creates Porn xAI, which bought Twitter earlier in the year in a very incestuous deal, sells access to “Grok,” a series of Large Language Models, the latest of which is called Grok 4, and which cost $490 million to train, likely because Musk’s Colossus data center is powered by inefficient fume-belching gas turbines that cost xAI $1 billion a month. To continue expanding Grok — and construct another data center called “Colossus 2” — Musk has had to pull together a Special Purpose Vehicle that NVIDIA will invest as much as $2 billion in, at which point it will raise around $18 billion in debt, buy lots of GPUs, and then rent those GPUs right back to Elon Musk. Now that’s what I call business! It isn’t clear what xAI’s revenue actually is because it’s now intertwined with the revenue of Twitter, which we also have little insight into. Grok also now has a very peculiar feature — a 3D AI girlfriend called Ani — along with a “spicy” mode for Not Safe For Work images and videos. If you’re wondering what those videos might be, read r/Grok, a Subreddit that appears to entirely consist of disgusting perverts posting vile, at-times-pornographic images and videos of the various ways they’ve convinced Grok to create something demeaning about a woman. I earnestly hope every single person who posts one of these videos has their access to the internet permanently removed. Anyway, this is what Elon Musk is spending $1 billion a month on — a bot that once called itself “MechaHitler” and sells itself to degenerates that likely burn millions of dollars a day creating AI pornography and whining like brats when Grok fails to submit to their perverted desires. xAI Is A Legitimate Threat To Elon Musk — And He’ll Be The Last Money To Leave AI I get that Elon Musk may seem like he has infinite money, but $1 billion a month is a great deal of money to a man who doesn’t have much liquid capital. Sure, Musk might wriggle out of the jam easily, but this is an existentially threatening amount of money. The plan seemed to be to get Tesla to buy (or invest) in xAI, except most shareholders appear to not want Tesla to do so, likely because xAI sucks. Yet that’s really the only plan for this company. Assuming that Colossus 2 ever gets built (I have my doubts), it will be three times larger than Colossus 1, the data center costing Musk a billion dollars a month. Though the terms are such that Musk will just be paying the SPV a monthly lease, one has to worry how much that lease would be, and whether Musk will be on the hook for things like electricity or water. In any case, CNBC reported this week that xAI was raising another $15 billion (though Musk claims this is “false”), on top of the $10 billion that xAI raised in September. In a just world, Grok would not exist. We do not live in that world.

OpenAI is not going to make its "trillions" selling ads, because it's impossible to guarantee that an LLM will do *anything* the same way twice - how, exactly, do you do ad targeting in a product most famous for its inconsistency? There's no proof it's possible.

OpenAI Is Not Going To Make A Ton Of Money Selling Ads “OpenAI is going to sell ads on ChatGPT” is the only real answer anybody ever gives me when it comes to how this shitass company manages to fart into the future, and god damn, have any of you ever actually read about how ads are bought and sold? One of the big tenets of ads is brand safety, which is why Twitter hemorrhaged so many advertisers during Elon’s ugly takeover. Any worthwhile advertiser needs to know for certain where the ads they show will be shown, and more specifically where they won’t be shown. And guess what you can’t know for sure about an LLM? Anything! You cannot guarantee that an ad for your brand won’t be placed next to somebody trying to generate a picture of Scooby Doo with a giant pair of tits, which makes chatbot-based advertising at best experimental and at worst a risk advertisers might not be willing to take. Also, I’m old enough to remember that OpenAI already tried doing product recommendations in April, with The Verge’s Jay Peters reporting that ChatGPT hallucinated retailers were selling the Nintendo Switch 2 months before it was actually available. The much-heralded arrival of Fiji Simo — a former Facebook person who is best known for redesigning things — won’t save OpenAI, either. Theory: OpenAI Can’t Do Ads Because It Can’t Even Guarantee Placement Within ChatGPT’s Answers Let’s get specific — the claim is that OpenAI’s hundreds of millions of free users could turn into revenue generating customers seemingly overnight with the glorious advent of advertising, which leads me to wonder why the company is taking its sweet time adding them to the product. We know Sam Altman is up for the idea, so what gives? Here’s an idea: Google and Facebook’s whole thing with advertisements is that you can target specific groups, and then have a link or product appear before other products in search. What if that isn’t possible within a Large Language Model? What if you can’t actually control where something appears, or how it appears? This would effectively neuter OpenAI’s ad strategy, as one cannot guarantee that a link will appear above or below or beside anything. How does one sell advertising when the advertising platform doesn’t have a specific, standardized place where ads will appear? And even if these goobers work out how to do advertising, what makes you think that it’ll immediately be a hit? This lack of control over placement will also translate to a lack of precise targeting.

How Did We Get Here? So, as a little catchup, all of this bullshit started in November 2022 when ChatGPT launched, at a time when everybody was sort of realizing that there were no more hypergrowth ideas (what I call the Rot-Com Bubble). Large Language Models require thousands of GPUs (Graphics Processing Units) to both train models and run “inference” — the process through which a model creates an output like text or an image — and these GPUs are both power-intensive and create a lot of heat, requiring expensive cooling systems that are both extremely power- and water-hungry. Back in 2022 (and 2023), people were convinced of the “Scaling Laws” of AI (based on a 2020 paper out of OpenAI, here’s a great piece by Charlie Meyer on the subject), that suggested that (to quote Meyer) there was “compelling evidence that increasing the size of large language models would increase their performance,” and models became larger by feeding them more training data. The jump from GPT-3.5 to GPT-4 was huge, with dramatically more-nuanced outputs, and people believed that every subsequent jump would be as impressive. It wasn’t. By November 2024, it became apparent that model developers had hit diminishing returns on model training, and were struggling to find new ways to improve them. Their only hope was “test-time compute” — giving models more compute power to calculate an output using reasoning models that take an input and make a plan of action that the model then executes, getting better outputs while spending a bunch more tokens, increasing the cost of inference dramatically. But that didn’t really fix anything other than “how to make AI startups spend more money on compute,” and categorically failing to fix the only problem that mattered — that every single AI company is unprofitable because of the cost of running AI model-based services. Since then, we’ve kind of been in a weird, eerie holding pattern. In January 2025, a Chinese hedge fund would release DeepSeek R1, a r… DeepSeek was immediately memory-holed by every major AI company, none of whom decided to read the papers published by DeepSeek about how the model was trained, other than OpenAI vaguely suggesting it might sue the company because ChatGPT outputs were used to train DeepSeek R1 and v3. Nevertheless, nobody in America seemed to bother to learn from DeepSeek, and instead set on a path to build even bigger, more huger models, such as GPT-4.5 ($400 million to train) and Claude Opus 4. Otherwise, “progress” has been thin, as have new or meaningful products since GPT-4’s release in 2023, other than OpenAI’s awkward and expensive video generation app Sora, which I’ll get to later. Models have got “better” in some indeterminate way based on benchmarks that are either rigged in their favor or that they cheat on. 2025 was not the year of agents, as they get things wrong 70% of the time according to Carnegie Mellon University, and have a 40% fail rate on single step queries (literally asking a question and getting an answer) and a 65% fail-rate on multi-step queries (as in “go and look this up and then do something else”) according to a study by Salesforce. In fact, Large Language Models are basically in the same place they were a year ago, except now everybody is anxious about the AI bubble, because nothing has really happened other than companies raising then burning hundreds of millions or billions of dollars.

any gamedev (solo to AAA) that doesn't develop their pc game with at least one setting that runs smoothly with the hardware at the top percentile of the steam hardware survey (eg. a rtx 3060 level of GPU + a 7 year old 8 core processor + 16 GB of ram in a 1080p monitor) is an insane person
