I share this because it was a good reminder for me of how our culture--and even the supposedly "kid friendly" parts of our culture--can make violence seem like an easy and acceptable solution to problems. And a good reminder for me of the work it takes to continually resist those norms. 6/

I told 8 we can always work through these things together, and that "it's always okay to ask if you're not sure." Then we brainstormed some ways to manage the Creepers and work through the distraction to build even if there are a whole bunch of Creepers wandering around in the background. 5/

I then explained--if we let ourselves use violence to solve problems in video games, then it can become easier to see violence as a strategy for solving problems in real life. "Does that make sense?" I asked. "Yeah," 8 said, "I'm really sorry. I won't do it again." I thanked 8 and offered a hug. 4/
