Greetings from the violent city of Seattle.

Most of the fires currently burning in the Cascades are lightning caused. Per NIFC, more total fires than last year, but less acreage burned. Could have additional activity due to conditions, but we're not too far out from season ending events. SoCal, however, is just getting started.

Rant about companies that purport to give you "choices about your privacy" through a toggle switch to opt in or out of targeted advertising, etc. - but deceptively don't label the toggle as to which direction is opting in and which is opting out. Any guesses on which way is which here?
Screenshot of a company's Privacy Option pop-up that purportedly gives you the option to allow or disallow all technologies. However, the toggle switch they provide does not instruct which way is opting in and which way is opting out.

Recs from the kick I'm on of re-reads of some older stuff: Of Men and Mountains; My Wilderness, The Pacific West both by William O. Douglas; Touching the Void by Joe Simpson. And my sister just gave me A Year in Paradise by Floyd Schmoe about living on Mt. Rainier in the 1900s, it's great so far.

Yay! Love them! Do you have a huckleberry comb/harvester or do you pick them one at a time (individually is my preference, because you can eat more in the moment, but wowza I've seen people clean up with the harvesters).

Agree on the dill beans. The recipe we use from Mom is below - think it's from the circa 1970s cookbook "Stocking Up: How to Preserve the Foods You Grow, Naturally" by Carol Stoner. But a stockpot of boiled green beans, new potatoes, bacon, and salt and pepper is also a family favorite.

Damn, glad you're okay.

First rule in avoiding a collapse, "don't be a dick ..." Why is that so hard?

Add another reason to why the Pulaski is my favorite tool for the fire line (and for gardening).

We're undiscerning rubes, so we use walnuts instead of pine nuts, and even throw a few jalapenos in some of the batches we process. I know, I know, Marcella Hazan would be appalled. But even we like to make it with quality Parmesan cheese!

The Republican appointees of the Supreme Court allowed this to happen.

Breaking news: Federal immigration officers may deport immigrants with as little as six hours’ notice to countries other than their own, even without assurances that the arrivals will be safe from persecution or torture, a top official said.
ICE memo outlines plan to deport migrants to countries where they are not citizens
The dramatic shift in policy could result in thousands of immigrants being deported to places where they lack family ties or even a common language.

It is a terrible idea, but not new except the digital component. The USFS has let logging cos. self select trees on the ground for a while, under the guise of fuels reduction for wildfire mitigation, designation by prescription or conditions based management. W/ predictable sad results. E.g.:

Audio books + long outside jaunts are about the only thing keeping me sane these days.
A blue heron fishes along the beach of a blue ocean sound with a sail boat and island in the distance. Snow capped Olympic mountains tower in a blue sky rising over verdant islands. In the foreground, beachcombers at low tide are exploring tide pools along a Puget Sound beach.

The U.S. Govt. already tried replacing skilled migrant farmworkers with inexperienced "able-bodied" Americans. *Surprisingly*, turns out picking crops in 100° heat isn't that easy and the experiment failed. Guess if a social influencer promotes the idea w/ video maybe it'll take this time around ...
When The U.S. Government Tried To Replace Migrant Farmworkers With High Schoolers
In 1964, a program that brought migrant Mexican laborers to the U.S. ended. So the U.S. recruited American students to pick crops instead. When they saw their living conditions, strikes ensued.

FFS, such BS. So sorry.

Yep. Can't wait until next year when healthcare exchange subsidies are gone and I'm back to paying ~$800.00 a month for a $10,000 deductible policy. Fun times. Apparently, rather than being self-employed, I need a "real" job.

So freaking maddening. Glad you prevailed in the stand off.

If I'm reading it correctly, it also makes clear the Secretary of Health can replace the panel that decides what qualifies as preventive health care that must be covered, yes?
