During the Civil War there were huge draft riots in New York. Poor people (many were immigrants) were angry about well off people paying people to go in the army in their stead.

Having said that, I have no use for those, like Trump and the finally dead Dick Cheney who took deferments and either supported the war or were just too busy in their own lives to worry about others, like your husband, who they sent to fight for them.

I in no way want to diss your husband and others that served but there was no way that I could personally serve US Imperialism in Viet Nam. I got student deferments and had plans in place to either disappear or go to Canada if that went away. Meanwhile, I did all I could to stop the war.
