I agree with emphasizing peak value. Not to bring it back to WAR but I think anyone would take 5 seasons of 8 WAR over 10 seasons of 4. Which is basically my argument against Hamels. On the other hand he won them a WS which is sort of what the sport is about ultimately

Ps - it is fascinating to look at the career arc of these guys. Hernandez and jones were basically done at 30. Most of the rest all these done as true stars by 32ish.

I feel like almost all those guys are borderline. For me Abreu, hamels, Pedroia, and Hernandez come up a little short. Utley and Jones I think are yes.

Agreed. I’ve watched the cooks play 50 times and on the one hand I don’t think he caught it but on the other he may have had control for 1/00th of a second. While on the ground. While being touched down. So….no idea

In fairness. That was comically close.

What’s your view on that deep ball? I watched it 10 times and I don’t think it’s a catch.

We do so many things that are telltale signs of poorly coached teams.. The way we defended that last bc possession is one example. How does Kyle drop there? I’m sure red didn’t say hey let’s them walk into a wide open three but yet… Here we are.

I love Red. But it’s just not working
January 17, 2026 at 9:22 PM
Ha didn’t pitch a shutout? I guess I have to give him credit for a complete game… but one in which he gave up about 18 hits and 10 runs. I give him credit for being out there, but we are going to definitely need him to play better this week. Or chip on his side every play. Or both

Because projecting 19 year olds is hard? Also we are 1.3 years in. A lot of stuff could change from here.
December 18, 2025 at 1:18 AM
It is interesting point. if you asked me for stats on most great players I’d come pretty close on ppg, assts, rbs, fg%, etc etc. For turnovers, I’d be like… umm somewhere between 1.5 and four?
December 10, 2025 at 11:47 PM
It’s a hard problem and I’m skeptical of anyone touting simple solutions as cure alls. That said…I think we can all agree that the current system leaves substantial room for improvement
December 10, 2025 at 5:04 PM
Are we sure that isn’t Troy Murphy?

Right. good enough to be in the mix, and if you get into the mix, anything can happen. teardown, even with JT , is still a crapshoot. I would’ve gone tear down, but I get it. The other thing is JB/DW probably don’t lose a ton of value in a year if you change your mind. Injury risk aside.
December 6, 2025 at 10:14 PM
It’s much more difficult for the Celtics given that they have been above aprons for years with the restrictions that come with that, have two max players, and don’t have any picks aside from their own. So they have few ways to add anyone. They’re gonna have to win with the guys they have
December 6, 2025 at 9:42 PM
Good enough for what is a fair question. I’ve always looked at it as if you have a realistic path to make the finals in next 3 years you don’t do a teardown. And by that definition the celts shouldn’t. But…the new cap rules make acquiring pieces so difficult for teams in c’s position

Top 5ish pre Achilles. I mean, I’m not knocking the approach, because the tanking option sucks too, but honestly, I think the chances that they’re going to be good enough are pretty slim. If post Achilles JT, and over 30 jb and dw are your top 5 your role players need to be really good.
December 6, 2025 at 7:52 PM
They had two options: 1. Full tank: under cap, acquire 6-8 1s/swaps plus a couple young players for jb/dw, lottery with our own picks, hope to contend in 3 yrs. 2. Do what they are doing and hope over 30 JB/DW and post Achilles JT, plus role players, is enough. Neither is great option.

Would he have been the first person that would have accepted it though?
December 3, 2025 at 6:32 PM
In fairness it’s been a long time and I don’t think those other situations were ideal (not that this one is). He has been at a high functioning organization for over a decade now, albeit one with a slightly different level of resources at their disposal.
December 3, 2025 at 4:02 PM
Exactly. Going to 3-2 was arguably the bigger error. wait…that sounds smoltzian doesn’t it…
November 2, 2025 at 11:03 PM
Question - presumably this ball would have gone 20ish ft farther at coors field. Does this adjust for that?

I love that deal for the cowboys
