From high seas to EEZs: The role of deep-sea science in shaping knowledge-based ocean policy decisions
Over fifty-nine percent of marine ecosystems worldwide now experience significant, cumulative effects resulting from various human activities. Once regarded as remote and largely untouched, deep-sea environments are increasingly recognized as being impacted by a range of anthropogenic pressures as well as climate change. To safeguard marine biodiversity, we need robust, science-driven policy that protects ocean ecosystems and habitats, especially with continued attention on the creation of large scale MPAs. This session welcomes contributions that examine the extent, underlying mechanisms, and impacts of human-induced changes on deep-sea ecosystems, both pelagic and benthic as well as how scientific research can translate into impactful conservation. Participations in this session may be from a wide range of multidisciplinary perspectives from biological or ecological studies investigating habitat disturbances or biodiversity losses, to policy and social science research addressing governance frameworks or stakeholder engagement. Our goal is to present work that bridges the gap between scientific discovery to policy implementation in the deep sea.

The deep sea is Earth's final frontier—covering more than 60% of the planet's surface, it's a vast, dark, and largely unexplored world teeming with life. Despite its remoteness, the deep sea regulates global climate, supports unique ecosystems, and holds untold scientific discoveries.

The famous explorer (and my friend) Victor Vescovo continues his financial, technical, & technological critique of #DeepSeaMining, making the case that the non-environmental aspects will make it fail, and that technology has moved on from making it viable.

Hello! Please share broadly: I’m looking for a PhD for Fall ‘25. Mainly not in US. My interests lie in ecotoxicology, community ecology, and aquatic ecosystems, but herps 🐍🦎🐸🐢 are my passion. My masters work has involved macrophytes, daphnia, and pesticides. DM me for more info + my CV. Thanks! 🧪
