we do think there's something to be said for books whose cast, plot, and world-building are bad but in INTERESTING ways—the sheer quantity of Everything That Is Happening keeps us coming back to grapple with the series!

Like I adored Anne McCaffrey but then you go back and read the Dragonriders of Pern now and it's like "um the specific color dragons pick you based on if you're gay or not what the fuck"
Mid-20th century sci-fi is wild because every author was progressively outspoken against one form of bigotry while being completely on-board for another.
