A good deal of violence against civilians from WWII bombings of cities onward assumes that the will of the people can be crushed and it generally fails. As the piece mentions, partly on the assumption that most people are cowardly and selfish. Mostly we're not.

They won't have the numbers to occupy the nation and force everyone to comply, and that's why they're engaged in such an aggressive show of force. They're hoping we all get cowed into submission and do their work of suppression ourselves.

Our weekly protests at the courthouse circle in Pittsboro NC usually draw 30-50 people. Today three hundred fired up people filled the sidewalk around the entire courthouse. The response from passersby was very positive.
