marceline is a real character, for sure — her back legs / tail seem to be double-jointed so she struggles staying upright sometimes, but gets by just fine — sorry to hear about yours, it's awfully hard to lose someone you love

easily, my film recommendation of the week is TRAIN DREAMS, possibly still in a cinema near you

11 / #31for31 — SAINT MAUD

to aspire for more, for meaning — and the lengths to which we'll go. it's a slightly slow burner but, i think, very worth the (very reasonable 80min) runtime.

7 / #31for31 — GOOD BOY

story was okay, but this had the most authentic animal performance i remember watching. you can tell Indy is the filmmakers' dog — there's a tangible sense of trust & care & mourning throughout.

(NECESSARY) SPOILER 🚨
dog doesn't die, watch it

5 / #31for31 — THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT

gratuitous sexual abuse / r*pe, alongside jovial music & satirical scenes of bumbling police officers mounting a pickup carrying chickens driven by a caricatured black woman — & film title: totally irrelevant?!

Wes Craven got better

i've had a cracking week of first watches, tbh — looking forward to #31for31 🎃

thanks to @kermodemovie.bsky.social & @nelsonjenny.bsky.social for this evening's event in Sherborne, talking about their new book MARK KERMODE'S SURROUND SOUND 🎵

gave Mark a thank you letter, got my BFI Film Classics book on THE EXORCIST signed, learned a bunch — & got cheesy chips after 👌

anyone a fan of #BlackoutPoetry?

i enjoy it as a bit of a creative fun, often from already wonderfully crafted poems / writing that just happen to use a word or two i like

A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET is the first in my latest watch-through of classic horror film franchises — there's some baggy space in this one that could have been trimmed, but Freddy Kreuger & the concept & the atmosphere are wonderful(ly horrid)

watched a couple short films this morn at the suggestion of Faculty of Horror podcast (in 2015 — lots of catching up to do), both by Ashlea Wessel

🫟 INK, 2016
🩸 TiCK, 2018

both reminded me how great short stories are — whether they land or not, you feel & find out fast

one more reason to love Kurt Vonnegut — in GALÁPAGOS, he beautifully outlines the insult of technology taking over what we're able to do as people 📚 #BookSky

what actor's expression in a movie will stay with you for the rest of your life?

big dino dude in JURASSIC WORLD REBIRTH is a letdown, script = teeth-grindingly dull, a character survives with absolutely zero explanation

but Edwards createa stunning landscapes, actors work with what they have, obligatory fun t-rex scene

i'll always gobble up Jurassic IP

mainline Jodie Comer & Ralph Fiennes into my damn veins every single day

28 YEARS LATER was good fun and tees up a trilogy of films on a far more maniacal path than the gritty original (then again, i guess it's years later...)

second blood donation

more importantly, i ate three kitkats (two consumed already in this photo), so would thoroughly recommend the process
