INTRO: I'm a Victorian literature scholar and ecocritic. Currently working on a book about lawns. I write (mostly funny) essays and host a podcast interviewing other essayists. (Hit me up! I'm always looking for guests.) I play the piano, I bake, I read. Middlemarch 4-eva.

"Erosion..." If only it were so gentle and organic LOL. 😭

POP QUIZ, CLASS! When the protagonist boasts "I have never been called for jury duty," and then two days later receives a summons for jury duty, that is an example of ________ irony.

"Gastrocritical!" 🤯 *bows down*

I know this has nothing to do with your post, but can I just add a rider to this moratorium banning "curate" and "craft" w/r/t to food and drink items?

I mean, even the phrase "TRICKLE down" kind of gives away the game, right? Even if the damn theory worked, it was never meant to be a "gushing" down or a "torrent" down. Y'all get just a ... trickle

Oh YAY! I am glad you were found. (Just seeing this now as I don't log in that often.) Thanks again for writing such a banger that I have remembered all this time.

I've been reading Wendell Berry (and bell hooks on Wendell Berry) lately, so feeling fully prepared to say that everything is the fault of the specialization of labor

Has there ever been a foodstuff so mercilessly crumbly

My fave was the whole stanza about the glue 😆

Oh please, thank the poet! I wish he was here on Bluesky to soak up all the adulation! 😀

@rdouglasjohnson.bsky.social (assuming that is the same poet) doesn't seem to be active on Bluesky, but let us all admire his handiwork nonetheless

In honor of National Poetry Day, the greatest parody rewrite of all time:
Screen cap of parodic version of William Blake's "The Tyger" that begins:
Tyger! Tyger! Burning bright
(Not sure if I spelled that right)
What immortal hand or eye
Could fashion such a stripy guy?
What the hammer that hath hewn it
Into such a chonky unit?
Did who made the lamb make thee,
Or an external franchisee?

Let us not forget that Oscar Wilde was bi!

The (mostly) missing piece of the Epstein coverage, for example. Poor people -- especially poor women and poor POC, but not exclusively -- are just plain disposable.

Yep. They might as well have acted like a good newspaper all this time

OMG at first I misread this as suggesting that some evidence had come out that RR was a hateful bigot and my heart stopped. Don’t take my nice handsome dead man away from me!!! 😭

Well thank you this made my day

I collect pictures of gate latches. The endless minute variations and human ingenuity appeal to me greatly, and the countless hands that have moved them. This one is between Near and Far Sawrey, Lake District and has a lovely combination of textures between the iron, wooden gate, and stone gatepost.
A photo of a gate with rusty brown metal gate latch.

I’ve been thinking a lot about how I initially thought “we’ll all get through this together” and “we will always have our communities,” but it turns out everyone is too sad and exhausted to hang out with other people and everyone is just staying home and watching TV 😥

Yes yes YES. Same thought nearly every day: “Well books survived the Nazis.” I also think to myself, repeatedly, “Books are what we’re fighting FOR.” It would be kind of silly to stop writing them now. 🙂
