Tootin' about photography (largely of the bird variety these days, using a Fujifilm camera), generative art (plus pen plotting), computing (increasingly […] [bridged from https://mastodon.social/@doersino on the fediverse by https://fed.brid.gy/ ]

This is your daily dose of tiny tree content.
A tree sapling growing from moss in a forest, overcast/soft light.

Back in April, when I was in Amsterdam photographing herons waitung/hoping/longing for leftovers from the fish stalls at Albert Cuypstraat Market, guess who swept in and picked up some fish bits before the less quick/agile/savvy herons dared to?
A starling standing on wet asphalt, something white in its beak. Same shot, but shaking the white thingy around.

Obscure music Noah likes, #9: "A Warm Place" by Nine Inch Nails. But not the original (which isn't obscure at all!) – instead, I like this 4✕ slower version, which turns it sort of ambient; melancholic but warm. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LrjyuN2xkcs

Chilly early-morning early-autumn walks are the best.
Some kind of red berry growing from a lichen-covered tree branch. A tree-and-shrub-lined country lane in the early morning, slightly misty, but sun-lit, rays of light. Bit of yellow/orange foliage, but still mostly green.

It's always fun to come across old boundary stones in the forest.

Also, today I learned that where I live in Southern Germany, people used to bury little clay markers called "Grenzsteinzeuge" near boundary stones in case someone came along and moved/stole […]

A boundary stone in a forest. The numbers 5 and 8 appear separated by a coat of arms or something.

I’ll run out of heron shots from this past April’s trip to Amsterdam eventually. (But not yet!)
A heron perched on a market stall roof, wings partially outstretched.

Some mushrooms I saw on a long forest walk yesterday.
Dozens of tiny mushrooms growing from the soil end of a fallen tree. Small mushroom growing from the ground next to felled logs. Long wiry mushrooms, high contrast black-and-white.

Oh, and: Zooming way into the second shot, there's something you probably haven't seen before: Tiny little air bubbles trapped behind the heron's nictitating membrane!
Extreme close-up of a heron's eye mid.blink.

Blink and you'll miss it!

(Which is a phrase herons, if they could talk, would never feel a need to say to each other.)
Close-up portrait of a grey heron. Same shot, nictitating membrane closed.

A mysterious fuzzy orb on the forest floor.
A slightly fuzzy round mushroom kinda thing, probably just emerged, among dead leaves.

Oh, to be a tiny slug climbing moss sporophytes while blissfully unaware of geopolitics.
A small slug among moss.

This gull I saw in Amsterdam had an audience.
A gull on a pier with a bench, also three pigeons looking at it. Some trash strewn around.

I’ll never not be enamored with tiny trees.

(It’s actually a bit or a problem, walking-pace-wise, whenever I take my camera to the forest on sunny mornings/evenings.)
A spruce (or something like that) sapling in a forest, backlit by the rising sun.

Sure, you can harvest, cook, and eat mushrooms, but can you kill them in a way that matters?
Underexposed black-and-white close-up photograph of a fairly-standard-looking mushroom in a forest.

One more shot (all captured with my phone, by the way): This room was part of the photography lab where they would develop photographs taken at crime scenes. The black thing just in frame on the left is a revolving door that allowed people, but not light, to enter the darkroom. (4/4)
A roof, formerly whitewashed but paint peeling, a kind of wash basin on the right, a black object on the left. Light streaming in through the windows.

Lots of graffiti everywhere, of course, but also other kinds of art: The original windows by a grand staircase up into the second floor, and in one former office there, some plaster-based (I think) painting on a wall. (3/4)
A vertical, long ornate window. Artwork showing three or four blue-clad people, fairly angular and somewhat entwined.

Largely abandoned since 2002 and located in the infamous Bahnhofsviertel, the expansive building was briefly a nightclub, then became home to pigeons and homeless folks until it was bought out by a developer in 2018. That developer went bust in 2023 without […]

Black-and-white view down a long corridor of an abandoned building. An access panel on the right is open, and on the left, some graffiti saying "Alles Nazis". Black-and-white photograph of a wall with graffiti of an octopus/squid-kinda creature with the words "How am I?" sprayed next to it.

Couple weekends back, on a mainly-food-focused trip to Frankfurt (there's lots of good Korean spots there, hit me up for recommendations if you're interested!), my girlfriend and I went on a guided tour of the old police headquarters. (1/4)
Black-and-white photograph of a staircase, surrounded by fancy columns, framed by a doorframe with peeling paint. Dark, grungy kinda mood. Black-and-white view down a staircase, through the vertical bars supporting its handrail, in an abandoned building.

Went to the forest, saw tiny trees emerging from moss growing on fallen logs.

(Also got bitten by a tick, probably while scrambling down into a gully to photograph an ancient stone culvert for that website-about-things-in-my-local-forest project I mentioned […]

A tiny 10-centimer-tall fir tree growing among moss. Some water droplets on the moss tips. Blurred forest background. A dark stone arch culvert photographed at an angle, blurred foliage in the foreground covering parts of it.

An unedited* phone shot from this morning’s walk. Autumn is sneaking up on me.

* Unedited as in “I didn’t adjust anything before posting”, but of course The Algorithms living inside my phone did the things they do (I only shoot RAW on my proper camera).
A forest scene with a little early-morning mist in the air; the sun centered in the shot, filtering through leaves, its rays made visible and radiating outwards. Blue skies.
