I think it's because they know if they do enough public feaux outrage to seed public distrust of climate scientists (or any scientist), it will make it harder for those scientists to get public support in the future for increasing their funding. And this really sucks.

I suspect, unfortunately, that it's to promote suspicion, to solidify and normalize a dark "agenda driven" cloud over climate scientists publicly, and to eventually make it easier to justify auditing their funding/research, and wherever possible file criminal charges.

I'm a neuroscientist and open minded to relocating.
