This is still the case in countries that are predominantly Orthodox Christian, where Christmas is in January.

What I find really interesting is how Christmas was a fairly minor holiday for most Christians until Charles Dickens published A Christmas Carol. Before that it was a day when religious Christians would go to church, but otherwise it wasn’t even a day off except for rich people.

To your point, there’s a big difference between a Christian holiday with practices originating outside of Christianity (i.e. Christmas presents come from Saturnalia, Christmas trees come from Yuletide) and the holiday itself being secular. Also, many Christmas songs are overtly religious.
