What is a University Press?

On the acquisition of AUP by T&F (and my anger at it), the governance link between universities and university presses, and putting one's labour where one's values are.

What is a University Press?

Congratulations to @uclpress.bsky.social on ten years of open access book publishing. I still think one of the biggest successes of the UK approach to OA has been the resurgence of the subsidised university press landscape.

I suspect we lose far more access to content every year through publishers’ restrictive licensing of ebooks than we do from weeding print books.

Maybe you need some more artful positioning of your jacket. But also I think it causes just about the right amount of confusion!

Some good discussion of openwashing from commercial publishers and their proprietary platforms in the Q&A. Redirect your money from commercial publishers to community-led open access publishers. #EORC25

Enjoyed @judithfathallah.bsky.social's point that the citation advantage and openess of publishing #OpenAccess is more personally beneficial for researchers, particularly as publishing with "prestige" legacy publishers doesn't result in permanent contracts these days anyway!
