I thought part of the speed reading process was skipping over quite a bit and concentrating on the essential points. Very handy for some things, but not for reading serious fiction - unless you have to do a book report tomorrow morning.

Of course you did, silly me. As well, the iconic and renown parts are all told in flashback by Odysseus, who we are told is an itinerant liar, thief, and pirate. So did he want to leave Calypso, or did she tell him to get his lazy ass off her island?

Emily Wilson's translation? It's brilliant. It is an odd story though. Doesn't start where you'd expect and doesn't end where you'd expect. I also hadn't expected the great hero of the Trojan war to spend so much time crying.
