I got Michel Houellebecq's Atomised as a present the year it won the IMPAC award when I was 13. Still scarred. Gave me a lifelong hatred of Houellebecq though and I have cherished that. Also ultimately led me to one of my favourite interviews I've ever read www.theguardian.com/books/2008/m...

I wonder will we see any reckoning among European "liberal centrists" about the catastrophic failure of the man who was once their great white hope, Emmanuel Macron. He has wrought untold damage on confidence in politics and institutions in 🇫🇷 and has been an effective handmaiden for the far right.

My sincere thanks to everyone who has supported the Global Sumud Flotilla. I'm home safe & will be followed by the other Irish people today. I'm just catching up and have much more to share but for now I am so so grateful for everyone's attempts to free us. Remember that Gaza is the story not us.

Imagine being that tenant, having tried every single avenue of contact over 16 years only to be ignored time and time again, and then be told the issue was buried somewhere in the recesses of his mind.

Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin said "very comprehensive due diligence" was done on presidential candidate Jim Gavin, but that an issue with a former tenant was "probably buried somewhere in the recesses of his mind".

important reflections on the colonial archive and how we might use it, from @camilleriana.bsky.social - makes me wonder how to get myself over to Eritrea!
donalh.bsky.social
Indeed though every landlord legally was then as they are now required to declare a tenancy to the RTB and they knew he had tenants and seemingly never asked evidence for this. It would have been easily verifiable.
donalh.bsky.social
While it would have been hard for Fianna Fáil vetters to foresee the rent situation with Jim Gavin they could easily have asked for confirmation that he had registered tenancies with the RTB. Not doing so was a violation of the law. Should have raised flags.

But couldn't he just take the oath on election?
donalh.bsky.social
I'm not sure he would resign if he got in! Still, I think it's unlikely to happen.
donalh.bsky.social
Oh wow that looks so beautiful (and so chilly!) Proud and envious of you!
donalh.bsky.social
I should say my Dad, a bit of a floating Fianna Fáil voter, was outraged about it as are clearly many other older people but the visceral reaction is clearly stronger among younger cohorts.
donalh.bsky.social
I suppose the older people I know are almost all out in the distant burbs and stopped renting in their early twenties. That surely limits the duration of your exposure of and trauma from grim landlords.
donalh.bsky.social
Definitely not everyone and sure I'd say people who rented in Dublin back pre Celtic tiger had their fair sure of dismal landlords too!
donalh.bsky.social
Yeah sure the landlords in Dublin have been the pits for ever but I have spoken to people who feel bad for him because he was in their reading of it caught up in Celtic tiger madness and the crash. I have to say I've zero sympathy for the way he treated the tenant.

my bad landlord kept our deposit after letting a leak get so bad that mushrooms started growing in our bedroom and my partner got fungal pneumonia. so yeah, very difficult to relate to people saying "you'd have to feel sorry for Jim Gavin"
donalh.bsky.social
I'm getting a sense of a generational divide (as well as an obvious class one) on the Jim Gavin story. Older people I've spoken to seem quite sorry for him but everyone my age and younger seems to see this as a kind of vicarious revenge fantasy for all the bad landlords they've had over the years!

Sébastien Lecornu may have beaten all records as the shortest-lived French Prime Minister at only 27 days but he still lasted longer than Edwin "the Earth is 6000 years old" Poots 21 days as DUP Leader.

So much to catch up on post archive trip so can but so many distractions. First Jim Gavin drops out of the Irish presidential election now Lecornu resigns as French PM. We truly are cursed to live n interesting times.

When you see the summary of what Gavin did, it's egregious. I know it's been a tough campaign with scurrilous and unfounded allegations spread on social media that have been very upsetting for his family and hard not to feel for him on that front but his behaviour as a landlord was disgraceful.

Thinking of that Canadian who tried to mansplain in @drmarymcauliffe.bsky.social's mentions today. He will be devastated to hear Gavin is gone 😂

I loved The End of Outrage. Perhaps my favourite book on Irish history. It's such a good read.
