Historical context: Very similar to what the US did to Japan prior to Pearl Harbor. The US choked off Japan's oil supplies. For that, Japan went to war with the US. So now I guess the US is going to go to war with China bc they've stopped the rare minerals?

In 1971, Nixon imposed a 10% tariff on auto imports, adding ~$1,000 to Japan cars. Instead of a price relief, the Big 3 matched the hike, raising their own prices.

Recycling in USA vs in JPN.

USA: labels contain the triangle with a number inside.
JPN: Recycling has "pura" (プラ) - plastic

Everything that could need an identifier has one. Even the cover on the veggie tray has a pura label.

Weekly JPN waste is basically 3 groups: Burn, Recycle, Aluminum Cans.
