Um, my point is that the story is likely bogus. These people took the job because they WANT to intimidate others. And as you said, they can't qualify for other jobs where they get to feel powerful. Maybe a few regret it, but the vast majority likely get off on it, regardless of any pushback.

Agreed. Using polling in America is pointless when half the country reads at a 5th grade level and believes things that simply aren't true. The problem with the current SCOTUS is their blatant corruption along with "make it up as you go" decisions that have no constitutional basis.
