A thread. 🧵(bear with me)

When Writer Beware was founded, back in (gulp) 1998, pretty much the only viable path to a book-writing career was the agent-to-publisher route. Where access is narrow and desire is high, it's a bonanza for scammers 1/6

The tomatoes are coming in thick and fast now, but the cucumbers are starting to catch up. The ghosty-looking ones are Silver Slicers; the other is a Beit Alpha. (On the other hand, the pole beans are just getting started.) 🌱

This morning's haul. We've had such a rainy summer that blossom end rot has been a problem, but still getting a decent harvest. 🌱

Today's harvest: a handful of snow peas and a variety of beets. Itty bitty Bulls Blood, and more respectable examples of Chioggia, Golden Touchstone and Detroit Dark Red. 🌱

Filled a bare spot in the perennial shade garden with some pops of color and texture...and rabbits. 🌱

Broadleaf Batavian Endive, just about ready to harvest. Combined with diced prosciutto, hot cherry peppers, pecorino Romano and breadcrumbs, it'll make a divine dish of Utica Greens. 🌱 🍽

Tomato seedlings are taking over the den. Seven varieties represented here, along with a few peppers. 🌱

First plant-out day of the season. Escarole and lettuce seedlings, and a quick sowing of French Breakfast radishes. 🌱

The baby Batavian Broadleaf escarole has graduated to the hardening-off stage - and not a minute too soon. They're outgrowing their pots. 🌱

First of the spring seedlings are planted out! Granted, they're in a little pop-up greenhouse, with a frost cover to keep them snug in 20F nighttime temps, but they've finally graduated to the great outdoors. These are Little Gem romaine and Wildest Garden Mix, from Territorial Seed Company.

Baby greens getting their first 30 minutes of fresh air and sunshine, on the hardening-off road to planting in the garden. So adorable. 🌱

And so it begins: first seedlings from my early-spring sowing. These are Little Gem romaine lettuces. 🌱

I'm always intrigued by weird scams. Over at The Bad Place, there's an account for what looks like a fake lit agent @GLeslie_agent (no agency name, no website, posts are mostly faux-inspirational pablum). Just one reference to a client, whose profile also looks to be fake 1/5

PSA for writers: if a publisher dangles a contract offer but first wants to know how many of your own books you plan to buy...your answer will 100% determine whether you actually get the contract. Along w/ things like not paying royalties till production costs recouped, this is stealth vanity pub

So delighted when Bernd Heinrich's "In A Patch of Fireweed" was finally released in digital format. Only downside is that for some reason, it's formatted in an italic font (and no, it's not my reader). It's weirdly like having the book whispered to you. Terrific nonetheless. #naturewriting #booksky
