It's been a long time since I watched a Roy Roger's film, so maybe I should check out SUNSET IN EL DORADO+ARSON SQUAD (Palomar)—could be fun. ANCHORS AWEIGH, fourth big week at the Music Box. While I'm here, might as well get tickets for the Trapp Family Singers—Tyrolean Xmas Concert (Moore). 3/3

SUDAN (Grand) is the only Maria Montez/Jon Hall pairing where their characters don't end up together. Still too early, in my book, by will make exception for CHRISTMAS IN CONNECTICUT (Coliseum), probably my favorite Stanwyck film. 2/

Two Cary Grant films today that are fine…they're fine…just not top tier in my book: TOPPER (Colonial) and Hitchcock's SUSPICION (Varsity)—that said, both are enjoyable in their way…. I do like THE WOMAN IN THE WINDOW (Embassy) despite its cop-out ending. 1/

Question: do I sit through THE THREE STOOGES GO AROUND THE WORLD IN A DAZE (Paramount) for SIEGE OF THE SAXONS? Regardless, will catch LAWRENCE OF ARABIA in its final two days at the Coliseum. 3/3

THE THRILL OF IT ALL + GIDGET GOES TO ROME (Northgate) seems like a wonderfully carefree double-bill. Art house double-bill THE TRIAL + VICTIM notable for playing two venues in town, Ridgemont and Broadway, while Fellini's 8 1/2 (Varsity) screens the U-District. 2/

Burton & Taylor in their first post-CLEOPATRA film, THE V.I.P.S (Blue Mouse), popular enough for a holdover, but will it last 11 weeks like Billy Wilder's IRMA LA DOUCE (Music Box). 1/

Finally, who wants to go to the Valley Drive-in for an ORDINARY PEOPLE + THE ELEPHANT MAN double-feature.

*Might have to return to '81 in a few days to catch peak Siouxsie and the Banshees. 4/4

…very few of which were as sophisticated as promised. Peter Weir's now classic GALLIPOLI plays the Egyptian, but I'm more interested in THE SARAGOSSA MANUSCRIPT, though much like its source material, it went through countless cuts and bastardizations before a complete "text" could be restored. 3/

…ads emphasizing its campiness would soon follow. I know there's a lot of love for CUTTER'S WAY (Pike Place Cinema), but I've never warmed to it; now BODY HEAT, that's a hot neo-noir. HEAVY METAL (UA 70) part of the late 70s/early 80s movement toward adult-aimed animation… 2/

Burt Reynolds wants YOU to have his baby in PATERNITY—no thanks, daddy. Meanwhile, Faye Dunaway in her most infamous role, MOMMIE DEAREST (Cinerama)—looks to be early enough in the film's release when the studio thought it still had a prestige picture… 1/

You can see Marlene Dietrich in THE DEVIL IS A WOMAN with a girl revue (State) or without (Roycroft). But, of course, my heart belongs to Karloff & Lugosi in THE RAVEN (Roosevelt). 3/3

Don't think I've ever come across SHE MARRIED HER BOSS (Liberty) or THE DARK ANGEL (5th Ave) except maybe in filmographies of the principals. The film of the Joe Louis vs Max Baer fight (Winter Garden) is a must-see. TOP HAT (Blue Mouse) is prime Astaire & Rogers. 2/

It wouldn't be the 30s if there wasn't a Shirley Temple film, CURLY SUE (Coliseum) in release; companion feature COLLEGE SCANDAL sounds interesting, maybe I'll slip in wait. Peer into the future with BROADWAY MELODY OF 1936 (Music Box). 1/
doodydan.bsky.social
99 RIVER STREET (Liberty) is a fine noir. Of course, the biggest films out today are THE ROBE (5th Ave), which I've always kind of liked, George Stevens' SHANE starring Alan Ladd, and, by sheer size of its ad, A BLUEPRINT FOR MURDER (Coliseum). 3/3

Other 3D flicks out: CHARGE AT FEATHER RIVER (Hi-Line), THE MOONLIGHTER (Orpheum), WINGS OF THE HAWK (Lake City) and SECOND CHANCE (Rainier), which is the most enticing draw thanks to Mitchum, Darnell, and Palance. 2/

I have seen THOSE REDHEADS FROM SEATTLE (Paramount) in 3D and it's fun, but doesn't hold a patch on Hawkes' GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES (Roxy), which is screening with fog-bound noir DANGEROUS CROSSING. 1/

Rock & Roll double-bill, THE BUDDY HOLLY STORY + AMERICAN HOT WAX, a repeat from a few weeks ago. Love, love, love TIME AFTER TIME (Guild 45th) and William Goldman's MAGIC + THE OMEN is a great double-bill, playing on 2 of 3 screens at Lewis & Clark. 3/3
doodydan.bsky.social
…and Oz-ploitation classic PATRICK + THE BEES (Duwamish drive-in). World cinema lovers have their choice between two French classics LA CAGE AUX FOLLES (Varsity) and/or JULES ET JIM (Grand Illusion), or Kurosawa's Soviet-produced DERSU UZALA (Crest). 2/

How do I choose betweent MEATBALLS and NATIONAL LAMPOON'S ANIMAL HOUSE? Or neither, neither is an option, too. Spooky season films include ALIEN (UA 150), Frank Langella's DRACULA (Broadway), WHEN A STRANGER CALLS (various)… 1/
doodydan.bsky.social
And it wouldn't be the 60s without a Biblical epic screening in town, THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD (Lake City) featuring every star in Hollywood but had to import Jesus from Sweden. 4/4

Have vague memories of watching HOW TO STEAL A MILLION (Coliseum) on Saturday afternoon TV, never realized it was a William Wyler joint. Three Elizabeth Taylor vehicles, two Oscars: CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF + BUTTERFIELD 8 (Lewis & Clark/Northgate) and WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF (Blue Mouse). 3/
doodydan.bsky.social
…that's nothing compared to the 27 weeks for DR. ZHIVAGO (Music Box). You'll have to go to the drive-ins for Newman & Woodward's MOONLIGHTING WIVES. Great Hammer double-biil—RASPUTIN, THE MAD MONK + THE REPTILE—in Renton. Or there's the evergreen Bond double-bill of DR. NO + GOLDFINGER (Orpheum). 2/

Lee Marvin's Oscar winning turn in CAT BALLOU is worth a co-hit slot w/THE MAN CALLED FLINTSTONE. Merchant-Ivory's SHAKESPEARE WALLAH (Varsity) gets a Northwest premiere. Erotic film hit ALLEY CATS (Garden Art Theatre) in its 9th and "positively final week"… 1/
doodydan.bsky.social
Another great double-bill at the Varsity: GREAT EXPECTATIONS + BLACK NARCISSUS; or, I could do the Universal Technicolor double-bill of PHANTOM OF THE OPERA + ALI BABA AND THE 40 THIEVES (Columbia)… decisions, decisions…. 4/4
doodydan.bsky.social
A little early (seasonally) for the Christmas-themed Glenn Ford vehicle MR. SOFT TOUCH (Liberty) but I'm sure it will stick around town for the next few months. 3/
