you never ever fuck or date someone who you employ. just like categorically, never ever, not once, not on sundays, not in a house, not with a mouse, not here, not there, not anywhere

how it feels living in a foreign country as the only american member of my work team

why bother sharing this paywalled bullshit that no one can access
February 2, 2026 at 11:38 PM
i don't take a particularly high opinion of myself, but like, 90% of people in the US can't remember the last time they read a book man. america is not sending our best these days. tbh i left america a year and a half ago at this point so it's not really my business anyway

couldn't have put it better myself

my point is that, while mangione is obviously guilty and will be convicted of it, it's not going to be because the average american fails to see the legitimacy of a political assassination

anyone with actual firsthand experience interacting with the caliber of humans that make up the average jury for a criminal trial in a state like tennessee or oklahoma would know better than to say something foolish like this
February 1, 2026 at 11:09 PM
pervasive is all that matters. the belief that white people shouldn't be punished for murdering black people isn't normal, but it was absolutely pervasive in the society and legal system of the jim crow era south.
February 1, 2026 at 11:08 PM
in theory, yes. in practice, jury selection in the US is set up in such a way to almost systematically exclude anyone capable of worthwhile insight
February 1, 2026 at 11:07 PM
idk if you've been watching the news lately but a solid third of this country at minimum is murder enthusiasts

some of the most enthusiastic collaborators in the holocaust were eastern europeans who themselves were seen as subhuman slavs by the nazis. if hitler had won, a fair portion of the folks standing over mass graves in ukraine and belarus would've been in the next round of pits themselves

imagine having your life in the hands of twelve people too dumb to find a way out of jury duty
February 1, 2026 at 10:41 PM
i mean i personally think what he did is eminently justifiable on moral grounds, but legally he's so fucking guilty it's hilarious
February 1, 2026 at 10:40 PM
it gets to a point where believing in his eventual acquittal becomes a shibboleth for your belief in the rightness or wrongness of his actions, when the two are obviously completely separate questions—one being evidentiary, the other being more broadly moral
February 1, 2026 at 10:33 PM
yep. i became a decent writer because i practice the skill regularly. i do not need a robot to write my out of office autoreply
February 1, 2026 at 9:04 PM
well hitler is dead so i would probably say "woah look its dead hitler" and then find a custodian to help me clean up dead hitler
February 1, 2026 at 8:36 PM
why do people keep thinking he's going to be acquitted? the point of what he did isn't to be acquitted. it's to engage in propaganda of the deed and then drag out the trial and use it as a platform to continue spreading your message as long as possible

a lot of their music has a paranoid, anxious vibe that fits our current era well
February 1, 2026 at 12:40 PM
it's definitely close—"stuck off the realness" is one of the most perfect little phrases in all of music

an equally great (and equally threatening) opening line from another great new york group is the talking heads, life during wartime: "heard of a van that's loaded with weapons, packed up and ready to go"
