I think it’s because the band distanced themselves from “Escape” and so it put people off — I dunno, I always liked the SEE THEM TRY TO BRING THE HAMMER DOWN part
doomedparade.bsky.social
I can kinda understand the hate for “Escape” — I dig it — but “Trapped Under Ice” gets hard done by IMO

I of course had to look him up — his name is Adam Pearson, and he’s a champion and campaigner for others who suffer prejudice.

Absolutely. It’s even better on second viewing. The scene with ‘The Deformed Man’ is such a standout as well.

Under the Skin. 2013.

This flies under the radar compared to similarly stylized modern-era films like: Mandy, The Lighthouse, Annihilation, It Follows — but it belongs in those circles, with the added bonus that you get a very nude Scarlett Johansson.

Under the Skin. 2013. Dir: Jonathan Glazer. Scarlett Johansson prowls the Glasgow streets enticing lone men to take a ride in her van — what becomes of them is a mind blowing spoiler — but what’s so unique is that that the men aren’t even actors, and unaware they’re being filmed

I would say that, at least with Mamdani, it doesn’t feel like we’re boxed into voting between the lesser of 2 evils.

Mamdani is a rebirth of what the Democratic Party should be

The Goblin scores are as much part of his films as the cast.

Case in point —

Deep Red / Profondo Rosso. 1975. An excerpt of David Hemmings exploring the abandoned house — the full sequence is some of the best camerawork, editing & music combo you’ll see in a #Giallo. Dario Argento & Goblin went together like Leone & Morricone. This is all insanely good.

Argento loves fcking with the audience too — similar to Kubrick in The Shining — look at the camera shot 29s into the clip, and notice the re-positioning of the furniture with respect to the rest of the sequence. It’s these little things that separate art from Netflix slop.

There’s a jarring use of space in Deep Red [similar to The Shining] — in this scene, Argento needs distance to get that wide shot — table in foreground, actors in background…then…flash close up to feet w/ actors in foreground and table in background. He’s moving furniture on us in quick fire edits 🤯
doomedparade.bsky.social
This throwaway moment when Suzy first arrives at the ballet school ends up becoming a significant plot device. Similar to how Argento used the mirror reflection in Deep Red, these tiny moments are forgotten —that is, until he reprises them later as clues to the plot twists

This. For all the benefits of the Internet, the notion that people need to be housed together by way of algorithmically-run social media platforms is disastrous. Humans are already naturally tribal and in constant warring factions — and now we’re at 8B people on this planet. Something’s gotta give.
doomedparade.bsky.social
Bringing humanity closer together by way of the Internet, in hindsight, has been a fucking disaster

The Changeling is top 10 worthy
doomedparade.bsky.social
Yeah fair enough — I don’t actually remember that part in Poltergeist though 🤔

How about one ghost — or rather, an ‘entity’…

The Entity. 1982. This is seriously one of the best horrors from the 80s — and massively underrated. I don’t understand how it has a 35 Metascore on IMDB. Ignore the haters, this is up there with Poltergeist & The Changeling for haunted horror afaic. #Horror #Filmsky

At the end of the day, my tastes lean towards the *surreal* end of the spectrum — even the goriest shit in old Italian B movies is perfect because it’s uniquely vintage and has its own charm — but when it’s modern era realistic then no. I want to escape to another dimension, not watch the 9pm news.

Shape of Water is *fantastic* — genuinely deserved all its Oscar wins. For me it’s the 2nd best Guillermo del Toro film.

It’s kinda what I said to sub:

I really enjoyed the story — and Sally Hawkins is incredible, she should have won the Oscar for The Shape of Water — but the gore was so ridiculous, to the extent that it removed me from the film altogether. It was trying to be Hereditary and ended up being Saw part 9.
doomedparade.bsky.social
Oh now yes — Talk to Me was very good.

All of these are better than Bring Her Back fwiw —

Yes — I liked it, but as ironic as it is, I thought the gore was unnecessary for what the film was trying to be.

Bring Her Back is gory — to a fault. The story is already dark enough, both tragic & terrifying, but the gore is nonsensical. A distraction. It’s as if the writers didn’t believe in their own storytelling, so they kept interrupting any suspense or tension with cheap cut-scenes for some TikTok clout.
