A painter interested in the pockets of life that others ignore
‘French Riviera, Bethnal Green’ 2024 Oul on canvas

‘After the Hurricane’ 1988 Storm Amy reminded me of the painting I began a few weeks after the devastation caused in October1987, featuring King Edward Memorial Park, Shadwell. Unusually I have included myself in this picture!

‘The Shadow’ 2015. Arles towards end of Summer. In a quiet alley to escape the noise found in all tourist places these days and felt at home here where I could weave a story around the man ahead and the woman pulling aside a curtain to peer out.

‘Front Step’ 1975. Pencil drawing of parents made shortly before house requisitioned for ‘slum clearance’ to make way for concrete blocks of council flats. 50 years later these too look ready for the knackers’ yard

‘Regent’s Canal, Stepney’ 2002-17. By the time I was satisfied with this painting, the corrugated fences had been replaced and the tow path was teeming with joggers and cyclists. Railway bridge still rules ok though!

‘Theatre Royal, Stratford’ 2024. A few years the facade was repainted in tasteful, muted coffee and mocha colours but I prefer the building as it was- brash and glittery. This painting is in memory of those times

‘Grandad, Prospect Terrace’ 1975.Still have, yellowed by over use of fixative.NB sterilised milk bottles delivered on the sill- no fridge in the tiny scullery. He was a tough man, gave up smoking Senior Service at 72, lived to 92…Survived Ypres (pronounced Wipers in our family), shot through the arm

‘Turner’s Road, E3’ 1988. All that remains is the chimney and, nearby, a sign declaring ‘George Davis is innocent’, probably by the same hand. A man wearing an old greasy mac squatted in the building above the graffiti. He constantly tinkered with a decrepit old van parked on waste land opposite.

‘Whitsunday, Commercial Road’. An old favourite, I’ve posted before. Sold in1989, lost for almost 30 years until owner saw my work on SM and thought I might be the artist 😊. I think Video shop became travel agents which in turn became defunct because of internet. Funeral parlour now burger bar…⁦

‘Mum making tea’ 1974’. Our bathroom has just refurbished as ‘state of the art’ shower room. How times and expectations have changed! Back then, the bath was in scullery, but no plumbing. It was filled with buckets of water heated by geyser.

‘Nail Bar, Forest Gate’ The pet shop next door has finally succumbed to redevelopment. The Nail Bar continues to thrive despite competition from at least 2 other similar establishments. Meanwhile our Charlie 🐕 misses his regular supply of bones 🦴😢. Nail Bars don’t do it for me or Charlie 😂.

‘Mercerie, St. Jean du Gard’ 1998. A summer long ago in Southern France. It reminds me of the Cévennes where I spent a lot of time until recently. I love the memory inspired by this painting, shimmering pavements and long evenings outside, seated at a cafe table drinking wine 🍷 with friends 😊

‘Stepney Snooker Club at Night’ 1988. This painting was sold and I lost track of it for 34 years. It only came to light an exhibition I had at Townhouse in 2022. Buying a painting, a client said they had ‘Snooker Club’ from an auction, but in poor condition. I was delighted to restore it for them.

‘Play Zone’ 2024 As the Easter weekend is looming, time for the funfair to add a splash of colour to Wanstead Flats for the first of 3 annual visits. I enjoy wandering through at different times of day and in different weather conditions. #art #painting #funfairs #leisur

‘Mona Lisa Cafe’ 2019. This is the companion piece to last week’s post. It’s in World’s End, a stone’s throw from La Famiglia but world’s apart in terms of ambiance. Must admit, more comfortable with atmosphere in this location! Oscar is more visible in this painting.

‘La Familia’ 2019 A visit to Chelsea today. This is a painting of the final commission I accepted. Not my area, but the clients wanted a night time scene of their favourite restaurant and I couldn’t resist the Hopperesque atmosphere. Next week their favourite local greasy spoon cafe also painted

´Spring in the Midlands’ 1977. My parents had just been rehoused from a terraced house in a maze of grey and brown streets into a spacious council house on a hill. My dad loved the large back garden and grew chrysanthemums and tomatoes in a greenhouse at the back 😊. I still own this painting happily

‘The Albion, Stepney’ 2002. Only the bridge remains today, ‘George Davis is innocent’ still faintly visible….

‘Pet Shop, Forest Gate’ 2020. Smallholders was in business for local community 1948-2025, now making way for ‘apartment block’. R.I.P

Oil on canvas 2020.

‘Elegant Textiles’ 2024. A splash of colour from Middlesex Street in Spitalfields to brighten up a chilly, grey Spring morning. On Sundays this street is teeming with crowds seeking bargains and hidden treasures in Petticoat Lane market but I like the street late afternoon, sunny and empty 😊

‘Massala Grill, Stepney’ 2017. Formerly a cafe providing ‘full English’ breakfast for cab drivers. In 2025 it’s still standing but now called ‘Grub Takeaway! I would not have painted it if called that in 2017 😂 #art #painting #realism #urbanlandscape #eastend
March 9, 2025 at 9:51 AM
‘Launderette, Forest Gate’ 2022. Still standing!
March 6, 2025 at 7:43 AM
‘Going Home’ 2020. The only painting I’ve done since 1985 containing an image of myself 😂. Station is Wanstead Park.
February 26, 2025 at 7:19 PM
‘You’re no Banksy’ 2017. Long gone now but I heard that Ron, the owner, whom you see in the painting took off on a trip round Europe in the suspended VW camper van when the garage closed shortly after. #art #garages #eastlondon #painting
