There was one person who mentioned church against the amendment and one episcopal pastor for the amendment. One thing I really liked about Mamdani's campaign was his going to churches, synagogues and mosques. I am not religions but can appreciate these communities as social goods.

The people living outdoors for the most part have behavioral health problems. We don't give these people what they need for sure, particularly in this state. But in other states and countries, they would have regular daily supports and some would need and receive lifelong residential care.

Absolutely. What does "cut corporate subsidies" mean for the city of Portland though...or Multnomah County I guess. IDK if you can prevent more unfortunately unless this was a federal effort though since we are not an island. I'd love a federal effort though but nothing of the sort is coming under T

Because of the confluence of so many unique happenings in 2020 and our state mental health infrastructure being among the worst in the US. I support the things you list but they won't make a dent in the unsheltered homeless population which needs immediate help.
November 12, 2025 at 5:11 AM
Here's the thing: housing experts are not behavioral health experts. In my work I often see homeless or formerly homeless people who spent time unsheltered. They always have behavioral health issues; often, they don't understand they have this ("anosognosia"). Housing experts are not fixing this.

Boston is a right to shelter city. IDK about Chicago, but none of these cities have allowed their unsheltered population to grow like Portland has.
November 12, 2025 at 3:13 AM
The mayor is trying to do what the county will not, but this is a behavioral health crisis. Housing is not going to fix this. The county and state should be tackling this bc it is their jurisdiction.

I mean a lot of people think Jesus was startlingly prescient too haha. Thanks for the information.
November 11, 2025 at 7:15 PM
Can you link to this? Because my links say the Boston metro area of 4m+ people has 5756 homeless per last PIT count and our metro area has 12,034 with a population of 2.5m (including vancouver for population) per last PIT count
November 11, 2025 at 6:13 PM
Correct. This is why the state of Mass has a better mental health infrastructure in part. The govt deliver the services directly
November 11, 2025 at 5:55 PM
Greater Boston and the pox metro area-- we have a smaller pop and their sheer number of homeless is smaller. IDK what you are trying to say here? This is a dead end conversation.
November 11, 2025 at 5:54 PM
Depends on the athlete haha, may pros could retire today and have millions for their lifetime to live on from their investments
November 11, 2025 at 4:52 PM
Just doesn't sound applicable to contemporary lives tbh. Marx wasn't writing in our time or particular country/system. I think most people think "blue collar" when they hear "working class." But ok, thank you for the info
November 11, 2025 at 4:50 PM
So lawyers and surgeons working for non profit healthcare org are working class? This is where it gets confusing to me. Very few people are independently wealthy even highly paid professionals
November 11, 2025 at 4:43 PM
Can I inquire what the definition of working class is and does it include the middle class?
November 11, 2025 at 4:38 PM
So who is building the shelters in Boston?
November 11, 2025 at 4:27 PM
These cities have the highest proportion of sheltered homelessness. Boston's PIT count found 5756 homeless people in their last PIT count total. Multnomah county had 14864 the same year.
November 11, 2025 at 4:26 PM
They have fewer homeless people according to their PIT count.
November 11, 2025 at 7:27 AM
Well I am a social democrat who lives in NE Portland and am on it as are others I know. Anyhow it is ok to weigh in on Portland from the suburbs, particularly if you work here. We are all one metro region.
November 11, 2025 at 6:55 AM
Capitalism may cause homelessness for sure. I am for public housing. Our particular unsheltered population is a behavioral health issue for the vast majority of folks.
November 11, 2025 at 6:52 AM
The topic at hand is unsheltered homeless people.
November 11, 2025 at 6:10 AM
No?
November 11, 2025 at 6:10 AM
Nobody wants to have surgery, no one wants to spend the night in the hospital, no one wants to take their final exam, no one wants to get their teeth filled. It's hard being a person in society at times, isn't it?
November 11, 2025 at 6:09 AM
Morillo and co are ideologically against sweeps for a few reasons that make sense to their cause. The rest of Portland is horrified. See the left wing sub reddit for 100s of comments that she needs to lose her council seat. People like the mayor and his plan.
November 11, 2025 at 6:08 AM
The DSA somehow decided socialists think people should be left on the sidewalk without organization or regular services while waiting for a dream of social housing perhaps in the next decade. In countries that have robust social housing the homeless may spend time in shelters or otherwise.
