A person on the internet. The cats are Grizelle (the floofy one) and Sombra (the little one.) I teach programming for a living, but if you know someone hiring a full stack dev I'm all ears.
Sky's pinned post gave me strong "I want to be today's main character" vibes.

Eh, just because someone says something is pthonic doesn't mean it is. I mean, one of the founding documents agrees with you.

To quote what I'm talking about: "Readability counts." And "If the implementation is hard to explain, it's a bad idea."

PEP 20 – The Zen of Python | peps.python.org
Long time Pythoneer Tim Peters succinctly channels the BDFL’s guiding principles for Python’s design into 20 aphorisms, only 19 of which have been written down.

Is a sawzall a bad tool because people use it to make really ugly cuts (and/or injure themselves)?

Being able to do complicated things in hard to read ways is good, but so is knowing that you really shouldn't.

Stack Overflow is full of self important shits though, I agree entirely on that point.

Guitar case in point.

I spent the holiday hanging out with my cats, and it's been a lovely day.

As someone who has lost a family member to cancer this year: get screened people. Your chances are much better if it is caught early.

I was pre coffee, and forgot to change my unit. That's 4.48 million square meters.

Australia has approximately 427k km of paved road, with lanes that are 3.2-3.5m wide on average.

I don't know how many lanes on the average meter of road, so I'll make an assumption based on feels: 3 lanes on average for an average road width of 10.5m, and 4,483,500 square km of paved road.

Morning is when I have coffee, so it gets a pass.

For now.

A child, moved by forces they don't understand, sneaks into the kitchen to steal a cookie. A mouse watches hungrily from the shadows.

Their greed knows no bounds.

Many of these poems by Piet Hein were accompanied by little pen illustrations, and Consolation Grook had this illustration:

I think the question wasn't why the unlock was a thing, but more a why was that written the way that it was.

"t < 2m or t < 1m or t < 1m 40s" is logically the same as "t < 2m", because when you chain or statements together the whole thing is true if any part of it is true.

Also @cstross.bsky.social appears to be a pretty standup dude overall.

I particularly liked the perspectives from the New Management trilogy, and him going back to write some stories from the perspective of Mhari from the first Laundry Files book.

Man, I forgot about this one.

I read it when I was in high school and probably right after I read Snow Crash for the first time.

A monopoly on magnets? I'd have expected a dipoly on them.

There's a Tumblr post for that.

Why can't I use some of this brain space I use on remembering silly posts on something useful, like phone numbers or people's names?

If you really want to blame a meme though, blame the shift away from showing roommates in sitcoms. The death of the three-camera show filmed in front of a live studio audience basically removed the concept of roommates from media, and we started seeing "roommates are bad" jokes almost immediately.
November 11, 2025 at 12:26 PM
Honestly, there's just no real infrastructure to enable finding them outside your friend group anymore.

The go to for finding roommates outside your friend group used to be classified ads, and later craigslist. They are both atrophied at best, filled with ai-generated spam at worst.

To quote my favorite mathematician, tom7:

I do enjoy a beautiful math result where everything is in its right place, but to be honest, what really titillates me is when the problem is beautiful but the solution is upsetting.
