That's how it was marketed when it came out. I read it ages about thirteen, and I think I was a sensible age to read it.

Okay, it's just come back to me that the author was Leonard Barden. That's an unreliable memory, but he's still going, so you could ask him! This would suggest the paper was the Evening Standard, which he wrote for.

I think I remember this too, probably in a newspaper. This would have been mid-70s, I think, so compatible with you having a book edition a few years later.

I think there was a dark haired young man who explained things to a couple of kids? While Foster-ish figures enacted his descriptions.

I believe he never played it himself. And he and his team had a plan if anyone said it was unbalanced or ahistorical, which was basically "You can't expect to master this game on a single play through! Play it a few more times, and then get back to us!"
