And, predictably, battery technology is progressing so fast that long before the first mine produces refined ore, they won't need those materials. Sodium batteries are already in production in China.

In HS , the army was setting up beacons at the local airport during the Cuban missile crisis. We kids decided to go to the highest building in town and watch the show as missiles exploded. The missiles are still ready, but no one thinks of that any more. "plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose."

Carbon capture has important uses ... like capturing CO2 from cement plant chimneys where it is nicely concentrated, but it's very energy negative (and probably carbon negative) to extract it from the air.
