The Roget family name is familiar, as it is the same as Roget’s #Thesaurus of English Words and Phrases published by John’s father, Peter Mark Roget in 1852. After his father’s death, John himself revised and expanded his father’s Thesaurus, as did his son, Samuel Romilly Roget (1875–1953).

In his lifetime, Roget’s occupations included barrister, journalist, author and #illustrator, and he is described to have taken every opportunity in his free time to illustrate the places he visited.
