I edit a thing called The Hawai’i Review of Books, which I founded in April 2021 after seeing most of local Hawai’i media drop book and arts coverage. Our latest post on THROB (fortuitous acronym!) celebrates two important kanaka maoli poets in conversation serious, savory and boundary breaking.

We bid adieu to Stripes, who arrived one day and for 17 years watched over us, our house, and our neighborhood, greeting us in our driveway no matter how late we got home. He did voices to amuse himself and fool us: “Hellllo” sending me to the screen door more than once. A true friend and ratter.

Though I live in Honolulu and spend time in France, especially Brittany, I’m from Long Beach. This is the graveyard where my people are (except for the one in Forest Lawn). For years we received dividends from oil companies for what they piped out from under us.
