Once you are using nix it becomes your favorite hammer.
Its nice to have devtools and CI all in one configuration language.
November 27, 2025 at 10:08 AM
Do you mean devenv as the tool or flakes that are dev envs?
November 25, 2025 at 1:56 PM
After almost 3 hours. Uff.
November 14, 2025 at 8:10 AM
I wouldnt throw new users at Nix configs.
October 30, 2025 at 9:58 AM
If you build a very high level "drop your packages here" kinda config, that could be a solution.
Add auto update and it should be good.
You can write your own thing that translates rust-style toml into nix packages with version fixing for people who need it.

my rough idea:

You mean hyfetch?
October 26, 2025 at 12:14 PM
Nix mostly has governance problems cause of a lot of infighting.
I can't really call it fascist adjacent.
I haven't seen a good argument.
They aren't actively fighting against MIC adoption but neither does any other distro I know.

Enough reheating tech gripes from 2023ish. Go and do something fun.
Read a good book, play a boardgame with someone.

I am not saying he can't build software like that.
He can and he has.
Just that he doesn't think about those after him.
The maintainers are now stuck with patterns with zero types to guide them.
October 23, 2025 at 7:47 PM
I don't like webdev that much but I understand why TS is needed.

Having types especially in big long-term projects is just really useful.

Maybe his minimalist and simplistic approach to software is to blame.
October 23, 2025 at 7:47 PM
Yeah.
And that's one blog post of his.
There are some truly awful takes in some older ones.
And even just as a programmer not getting the benefits of TS is funny to me.
Idk if he changed on that but he didn't get it a few years back.
October 23, 2025 at 7:47 PM
I googled way too much the last few weeks around nix and DHH.
I don't think I understand the nix situation well enough to have a proper stance.
It's 2+ years of posts and archives.

But DHH is pretty clear cut IMO.
October 23, 2025 at 7:36 PM
Just see nix.
He weighed in on the political discussion around taking money from MIC companies (there by giving them soft-power).
Whilst he outright bans any political discussion in his companies.
Nix being a project he was to my knowledge never really involved in.
October 23, 2025 at 7:33 PM
If you truly wanna lose your mind look at his conduct around Ruby Central. Or the way he thrusts himself into random communities he barely knows and gives his takes on things that he has no business lecturing about.
October 23, 2025 at 7:33 PM
Omarchy
DHH is something. Just read DHHs blog.

I'm sorry but your pfp gave me an opportunity.
I couldn't let it pass. X)
October 19, 2025 at 1:24 PM
A 5000 line flake is insane.
Break that thing down.
Omg.
October 19, 2025 at 7:36 AM
I admit that some flakes are stupid.
Having a flake for your dev-environment is one of them. But there are tools like devenv making it way better.
October 19, 2025 at 7:36 AM
Nix fixes my gripes with other distros/package-managers. Having 1 configuration for all my devices is neat and not having orphaned packages is cool. Makes my OS feel less cluttered.
