I firmly believe that the current Pope was elected for exactly this reason. They chose wrongly in fascist Italy. They saw the writing on the wall when Trump was elected, then elected a more liberal Pope even though there had been conservative pushback against Francis for his whole time in office

I read a comment once that mentioned people think demons are hideous and terrifying because they are evil and were cast out, but really that particular mythological entity just looks like that. They were hideous and terrifying when they were angels too
