As I continue to look for a new role, I want to communicate my basic commitment that learning doesn’t need to be drudgery. In other words, if we can’t (or even shouldn’t) make desirable difficulties less difficult … how can we at least make them a bit more desirable?

Honoring the Labor of Learning (and Learners) - Pennsylvania College of Art & Design
Two weeks ago, in honor of Labor Day, I wrote about honoring the labor of teaching and how we can manage the ‘scope creep’ of increased expectations. We looked at the ‘scope of practice,’ a tool to ma...

Trying to follow this sage advice from Bo Burnham as I apply for and interview for a new role… but, do I suck as a person and just not know it?!?!?! JK! i Appreciate the humor among the indignities of “pitching” yourself to potential new colleagues. le sigh …

Sharing a few old blog posts as I look for a new role. This one has become a bit of an “educational development philosophy” for me: relationship-building, and the work of connective labor that underlies it, is evidence-based practice, even if it’s not always ”countable.”

Reposting some old blog entries here and on LinkedIn as I look for a new role. Just as open to roles focused on student success as I am more traditional, faculty facing CTL roles.

Thanks in advance for any help! Bluesky has been a great source of connection and community.

Writing is "more than words," in more ways than one. - Pennsylvania College of Art & Design
In a wonderful coincidence, I’ve had the privilege of reading not one but two books on the value of writing titled “More than words.” Earlier this year, I read John Warner’s More Than Words, an impass...

I appreciated this piece, but it feels incomplete without asking critical questions about the perceived value of work we ask students to do. Yes, free ChatGPT encourages our students to cheat, but so does their perception (!) of meaningless tasks to complete. www.newcartographies.com/p/the-myth-o...

Before my email account was promptly shut down, I received a few kind notes from students I had gotten to know in my (now Previous) position. In addition to whatever learning gains come from relationships, the idea that you made an impact can be a deep source of meaning.

#opentowork after a frustrating week. In the meantime, I’ll lift, hike, and continue learning to play organ. I have my family, my health, and music. Thanks to all of the Ed devs who have contributed to my sense of community in this work. Here’s to whatever’s next … #workwontloveyouback

I'm only 6 months behind, but this was a balm... In my first job, I had a consult where a graduate student said "I thought you were gonna tell me what I did good and not good." The expectation was there, and we have to change our behavior to change the expectation.

Chewing on this as I consider another blog post... do we model a 'grind' mindset for students, when other approaches might be better for them (and for us)? What toxic approaches to 'getting things done' have you inherited from workplaces, supervisors, dissertation chairs?
