Teaching about the social contract. I ask students to reflect on what freedoms they might be willing to give up for the good of society, what they wouldn’t. Many wrote deeply reflective things. But all I can remember is the student who said they would be willing to give up voting, but not weapons.

“God is an ever receding pocket of ignorance.” Neil deGrasse Tyson, god of the gaps theory. My students are quick to recognize the ignorance of historical figures (e.g. Divine Right) but I am always surprised that many are incapable (unwilling?) to apply concepts to 2025
