Did you know that when I'm not researching all things, health, ethics and society, the Independent is kind enough to let me write my thoughts on them? You can find all my columns here: www.independent.co.uk/author/alexi...

Christmas lights planning with my neighbour has already begun. We've taken a big step in our commitment to Christmas Cheer and are buying permanent lights that are literally all singing and all dancing. Soooo excited for this year's display!

Make sure it has a scannable bar code or it might be a scam. 😂

#EthicsHusband and I poised to book the prime parent evening spot on the online portal like most people prepped for Oasis tickets.

Uh oh, I think Fox's jam'n'cream biscuits are about to topple Malted Milks long-standing crown. I've bought two packets in as many weeks!

This is the face of someone who slept through me eating dinner and a double stuffed Oreo whilst he was on my lap, has only just realised what a missed opportunity that was, and has regrets. #FrenchieSky #Dogs

I've gotten really into #CozyCrime (which is probably the most 'in my 40s' thing about me being in my 40s). Unfortunately the fantastic writers of the genre like @richardosman1.bsky.social just can't write fast enough for me. I'm steaming through them. Any other suggestions out there? #Writing

The same confusion happened to me when I moved to the UK! A colleague mentioned being so hungry they nipped out for a flapjack that they ate on the way to work. Also they can be really yummy. Like eating a really nice bowl of oatmeal in bar form.

Just like vaccines, paracetamol literally saves the lives of pregnant women and babies. This junk is designed to scaremonger and further control women's bodies all at once. @caulfieldtim.bsky.social I'm dying to know your take on this!

Today is the day! You can catch Disease X on #BBC2 at 9 pm or iPlayer from this morning. Watch as Chris Van Tulleken investigates the next possible #pandemic and I make an appearance talking about #risk and #decision-making. Shout out to Prof Christophe Fraser who did the modelling!

Was really surprised to see myself in The Times today. This is my "serious face" in a promo still for Disease X.

I've been sitting on this for a while, but I was lucky enough to be a part of this documentary, Disease X, coming out tomorrow, 9 pm on BBC2. We talk about the next pandemic and I have my say on risk and health inequalities. Read more here and watch tomorrow! www.thetimes.com/article/e944...
Chris van Tulleken: Vaccine worry isn’t stupid — we have to listen
The doctor, author and children’s TV star says a pandemic is more likely than it was before Covid but that vilifying people won’t get us anywhere

Someone print this out and send it to every single department in government please.

Public health shouldn’t be centred around individual behaviour change. It should be focused on changing the wider commercial, social, environmental & ultimately political determinants of health. Behaviour change will naturally come when healthy behaviours are facilitated by those structural changes.

Full disclosure: I've never read the books or watched the movies, but I do think Sarah, who wrote this, is awesome, so have a read!

I've been spending the morning figuring out how podcast equipment works. Slightly worried that should these test recordings every been found, what historians will make of my choice of "20 minutes of adorable Kittens BEST COMPILATION" from YouTube as my "second voice" as I sort out mic inputs 😂

Is there anything that exemplified parenting more than booking a K-Pop Demon Hunters spa day for your kid and their two best friends, knowing simultaneously you are about to be the coolest parent ever, whilst also knowing a small part of your soul will die that day.

It's a serious issue but that made me giggle. Also no Waitrose? Is this because it so clearly private healthcare?
dralexispaton.bsky.social
For sure, but that's not the message coming through from government. It feels more like they're happy to have created a trip advisor for NHS trusts. Perhaps I am being cynical, but I do think it's disingenuous to continue promoting this kind of choice when there really isn't for most patients.
dralexispaton.bsky.social
This is such an excellent point about the NHS leader boards. The idea of patient choice of NHS trust is largely an illusion. For many there is only one trust they can use, and finding out where that trust, which they have to use, sits on the board is effectively useless and unhelpful information.
rebeccalinnett.bsky.social
Also what's the point? Wes Streeting says it's so patients can make an informed choice but I have absolutely no choice other than to be seen within my local Trust because it's largely based on where you live. He's making out we're consumers who can shop around.

Who are the league tables aimed at? Because this is what I do every day and the language used is impenetrable. Look at this exert. What on earth is being communicated here? Clarity over fancy language. I beg all policy makers.
