CONGRATS!!! I’m happy both our NIAAA grants came through!!

Wow. That is absolute madness indeed, and so frustrating to wait given such an amazing score. It’s hard to plan and function, right? Fingers and toes crossed for you!!

Extra grateful to receive an NIAAA R21 award today. My former labmate/grad school BFF (Amy Stamates) and I will use EMA to examine impulsivity/craving and alcohol when co-used with cannabis and/or nicotine among young adults.

As many are waiting on NIAAA awards, I thought I'd share some history:

Great news, congrats! Is it pre-doc & post-doc? (Thinking ahead for some students!)

Excited to share my new paper out in @addictionjournal.bsky.social 🎉

We analyzed data from 8 million+ primary care alcohol screenings to examine impacts of adult cannabis legalization (ACL) on alcohol use in California's largest healthcare system across four NIAAA-defined drinking limits. 🧵👇 1/n

We need to organize--let’s help each other.

NIH is cancelling grants, but it's not clear exactly what they're cancelling and why. Without this information, we can't respond.

I've started a Google Sheet to track grant cancellations.

Please add any canceled grants you know of and spread the word!

In case it's relevant for any #addictionsci friends - NIAAA's AA-2 study section met on 2/25 as planned and IPTA is now showing that it was rescheduled for 4/23/25 (original date of 2/20/25). I haven't been notified by any of this via email; just diligent eRA commons checking!

Wondering if your study section cancelled? I update this sheet daily. As of today, 56/124 study sections that should have met since Jan 2, 2025 have "not met as scheduled." docs.google.com/spreadsheets...

If an NIH grant you've worked hard on for years finally gets a great score, but NIH funding is frozen and being massively restructured, does it still make a sound?

A visualization I created to share with family and friends about how the NIH indirect rate costs will hurt science AND our economy.
To understand the devastation for U.S. science right now. Here is how NIH grants work:
somebody comes up with a research idea, like a tree sapling
NIH invests in the “direct cost” of that idea, aka buys the sapling
Let’s say that sapling is $100
