I've always loved Hull! It's my favourite University that I've never worked or studied at.

It's funnier the more I look at it. Why do we need so much Warrington?

It's definitely rose tinted glasses, but maybe there's something there. Sadly I think there will always be people who want to game the system.

But I do tend to the optimistic side, so I did think it was an interesting take.

I do think most of the LLM papers are crap and feel sorry for editors to having to wade through them. I guess my thoughts are about easier desk rejects, if it's just a rote paper that an LLM can do, is it a quick reject?

Just like if someone sent in a paper that just sequenced a gene it would be.

Yeah, I was very torn by that news. Sad/frustrated that a diamond journal has been snapped up by ACS and will be turned APC charging, but also, pleased that it wasn't just left to die. Difficult times.

I find that these articles are written as if AI adoption is inevitable, something we must push towards. But I've become less convinced over the last 2 yrs.

Headings like "AI Adoption Barriers" push this view. Why 'barriers', why not 'reasons' not to adopt AI (at least at this moment)?

I'm not anti-karaoke. We turn our seminar rooms into karaoke space for the Crickmas and summer party, and I can usually be found in there at least occasionally!

Well that's getting a serious upgrade. Laying fast, coming down hard now.

On the subject of precise language and “artificial intelligence,” I also really like this piece from Emily Tucker on power, technology, and language, and why the Center on Privacy & Technology "will stop using the terms 'artificial intelligence,' ‘AI,' and 'machine learning.’"
Artifice and Intelligence
Executive Director Emily Tucker explains why you won’t hear us say “artificial intelligence.”

I do keep a few bits and bobs around until Candlemas which is then - nice tablecloth etc. But the real tree has to go before it turns into even more of a fire hazard! 🔥🔥🔥
